Solar Panel Cleaning

Hand cleaning with pure water for residential, estate and commercial solar arrays across Centurion, Pretoria and greater Gauteng. From R50,00 per panel.

The problem

Soiling costs you output every single day

Panels do not fail when they get dirty. They simply produce less, and they do it quietly. A layer of dust and pollen thin enough to be invisible from the ground still blocks light from reaching the cells underneath.

On the Highveld the problem compounds. Nine dry months put grit on the glass, the first rains streak it rather than wash it, and by the time anyone notices the inverter figures, a season has gone.

Bird droppings and lichen are the more serious version of the same problem. Where a single cell is shaded and the rest of the string is not, that cell heats up. Left long enough, a hot spot causes permanent damage that no amount of cleaning will reverse.

Our method

How we clean a solar array

The method is deliberately unexciting. Panels are precision glass laminates with a coated surface, and the fastest way to ruin one is to treat it like a window.

Pure water, no chemicals

We clean with purified water and soft brushes. No detergents, no solvents and no wax. Detergent residue attracts dust back onto the glass within days and can attack panel seals over time.

Nothing abrasive, ever

Soft bristle heads on telescopic poles only. No scouring pads, no metal blades and no high pressure aimed at panel edges or junction boxes.

Off the panels where possible

Wherever the pitch and layout allow, our crew works from the roof structure or from the ground with poles rather than standing on the modules themselves.

Photographed before and after

Every array is photographed on arrival and on completion. You get the images whether you are on site that day or not.

Early or late, not midday

We avoid cleaning hot glass in the middle of a summer day. Thermal shock on a baking panel is an avoidable risk, so we schedule mornings and late afternoons.

We report what we see

Loose mountings, lifted cable ties, cracked glass, corroded clamps or standing water on a flat roof. If we see it we tell you, with a photograph.

What it costs

Our solar cleaning rates

Priced per panel, so a small residential string and a warehouse roof are quoted on the same honest basis. The more panels on a site, and the more sites booked on the same day, the lower the rate.

Job typeRate per panelNotes
Single storey roofFrom R50,00Standard residential access
Double storey roofFrom R60,00Additional height and access equipment
Volume and multiple sitesFrom R36,00Where six or more properties are booked on the same day
TravelR7,50 per kmRound trip from our Centurion base, outside the core area
Own water supplyR1 500,00 per visitWhere no site water is available and we bring our own
All rates are indicative starting prices for standard access, and every job is confirmed with a written quotation before any work begins. Difficult access, steep pitches, heavy lichen or unusually soiled arrays are quoted individually.

Questions

Solar cleaning, answered

How much extra output will I actually get?

It depends entirely on how dirty the array is, and anyone who gives you a fixed percentage before seeing your roof is guessing. A lightly dusted panel might gain very little. A panel under a tree with months of droppings on it can gain a great deal. The honest answer is that we will photograph the array, clean it, and you can compare your own inverter figures either side of the visit.

Can I not just clean them myself with a hosepipe?

You can rinse them, and it is better than nothing. Two things usually go wrong. Municipal water leaves mineral deposits behind as it dries, which is why we use purified water. And climbing onto a pitched roof with a hose is how people get hurt. If your array is ground mounted or on a low, safe roof, a rinse between professional cleans is sensible.

Do you clean the panels or the whole system?

We clean the panel surfaces and the immediately surrounding roof area, and we clear debris that has collected under and behind the array. We are cleaners, not electricians. We do not open junction boxes, work on inverters or touch DC wiring. Where we see an electrical concern we photograph it and tell you to get your installer out.

What about flat commercial roofs?

Those we handle regularly, and they are usually easier and safer than residential pitched roofs. See the commercial page for how scheduled cleaning works on office park and industrial installations.
